Instead of seeking financial gain, personal ambition is directed entirely to the acquisition of more time, the "rich" have stockpiled thousands or even millions of years, while the poor work, borrow or steal to get enough just to go to tomorrow. The Art of Conversation « Becoming Like Ben
Is a brief and brilliant piece of wisdom from Ben’s “The Way to Wealth.” I have copied Ben’s words uninterrupted below my comments, however, I just really want to elaborate on this piece of writing because it’s really the quintessential equation for productive conversation. In order, these are his points:
“ADMIRE LITTLE” – Don’t overly praise someone when your primary intent in talking to them is to extract benefit for yourself. This flaw in conversation is more modernly known as “brown-nosing” or ‘being a kiss ass.”
“HEAR MUCH” – Perhaps the most important rule of conversation, shut up and listen! If you’re having a conversation and talking a lot about how you or your company is awesome… just, shhhh .
“ALWAYS DISTRUST YOUR OWN REASON AND SOMETIMES THAT OF YOUR FRIENDS” – How many times have you been talking to someone who is dominating the conversation with his/her own fact based opinion, the majority of which was developed from something someone else said? They constantly interrupt with, “No, but see…” or “I don’t mean to interrupt, but…” Don’t be that guy.
“NEVER PRETEND TO WIT” - This kind of falls under “Admire little.” It’s those little jokes that you’ve somehow scripted into a conversation. Gross! If you could just see a video of yourself and your poor conversation participant, both of you wanting to move on to the next part of your day, but instead he’s pretending to have a chummy and hilarious bonding moment with you because even though he’s never read it, your laughing partner instinctively knows part two of Ben’s advice on this, ”BUT TO MAKE THAT OF OTHERS TO APPEAR AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.”
“HEARKEN TO WHAT IS SAID” – Respond to their question or statement, not to your own agenda in which you obviously have not achieved the slightest bit of interest.
And finally, “ANSWER TO THE PURPOSE” – Read through and apply all of the points above (or below), and what should be left coming out of your mouth will be ”THE PURPOSE.”
The Art of Conversation by Ben Franklin (1732)
“The great secret of succeeding in Conversation, is, To admire little, to hear much; allways to distrust our own Reason, and sometimes that of our Friends; never to pretend to Wit, but to make that of others appear as much as possibly we can; to hearken to what is said, and to answer to the purpose.
