Long term teachers retire as part of council savings

MANY familiar faces will disappear from Stewartry schools at the end of term.

Eighteen long-serving teachers will be retiring.

Kirkcudbright will see the single greatest loss, with eight teachers at Kirkcudbright Academy and three at the town’s primary school leaving posts.

The exodus has come about because of an early retirement scheme set-up by the council.

It was brought in to reduce costs in the authority’s education department by offering early retirement or voluntary severance to teachers.

Earlier this year teachers were invited to apply to the programme.

The applications of 10 secondary school teachers and eight primary teaching staff in the Stewartry were accepted. New faces will be filling the vacancies when schools return after the summer break.

The council’s director of education Colin Grant said: “This is a time of great change in our staffing profile across the authority. The education service along with parents, pupils and wider communities recognise the commitment of so many over a long number of years.

“We certainly owe much to the service of those staff who are retiring.

“We also welcome greatly this opportunity to appoint so many new staff across our schools and the number of applications for posts which have come not only from Dumfries and Galloway but from all parts of Scotland mean that we have secured a very high calibre of new teachers across our schools.”

A total of 79 teachers across the region will be retiring at the end of term.

Student visa rules: further changes come into effect

On 4th July 2011, further changes to the student visa rules have come into effect. These are part of wider UK Government’s changes to the visa policy for non-EU students, with the first set of changes having been introduced on 21 April 2011.

The changes to Tier 4 that take effect from 4 July are:

Restricted work entitlements: only those sponsored by higher education institutions (HEIs) and publicly funded further education colleges will be allowed to work part-time during term time and full time during vacations. Restricting sponsorship of dependants to those of students sponsored by HEIs on post-graduate courses lasting 12 months or longer and of government-sponsored students on courses lasting longer than 6 months. Institutions are required to confirm that any new courses represent genuine academic progression from the previous course studied in the UK. A streamlined application process for so-called “low risk nationals” sponsored by Highly Trusted Sponsors.

There will be further changes to Tier 4 which will come into effect in 2011 and in April 2012.
