Jamaican women honoured during Caribbean Week

MANHATTAN, New York:
JAMAICA TOOK pride of place at Caribbean Week in New York last week, when four of its outstanding women were recognised for their contribution to media and the tourism sector.
The four, Winsome 'Lady C' Charlton of WAVS Radio, Florida, and Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon, deputy editor of Travel and Life magazine, copped the Jamaica Tourist Board's Marcella Martinez and Marcia Vickery-Wallace Memorial awards respectively, while Glamour Tours' director, Myrtle 'Stepping Out' Dwyer and Jacqueline Johnson, president and CEO of Global Bridal Group, won the Caribbean Tourism Organization's Allied 'People's Choice' and Jerry Awards.
The four were hosted at a special luncheon during CTO's Caribbean Week at the Marriott Marquee in Manhattan.
'Caribbean Grammys'
Lauding Charlton on her recognition, Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett said, that like the long-time media specialist, Marcella Martinez, the 2011 recipient Charlton was a woman passionate about her endeavours to share the extraordinary individuality of the region.
"Winsome expresses this through her ardent love of Caribbean music. It was this eagerness to draw increased awareness to the distinctive music of the Caribbean that led her in 1994 to found the Reggae Soca Awards," acknowledged the tourism minister.
The Reggae Soca Awards have since been tagged the 'Caribbean Grammys' by Charlton who boasts the distinction of introducing the first 24-hour/seven-day-per-week Caribbean radio station in South Florida.
Her counterpart, Greaves-Gabbadon was honoured for excellence in travel journalism. "As deputy editor of Caribbean Travel and Life , a newsstand magazine dedicated exclusively to the region, she transports her readers to the beaches and beyond, writing and editing content about all aspects of Caribbean travel and lifestyle," said Jamaica's director of tourism, John Lynch.

For the recalibrated and retooled Dwyer, a household name in the industry, this award came as no surprise to those present, having served the last 34 years at Half Moon.
