Liz Allen: 'Best. Camp. Ever.'

Our Fourth of July celebration began midweek when two of my grandsons, Jerry, 7, and Cam, 9, conducted a flag ceremony in my living room, re-enacting lessons from Cub Scouts.

"Get Alex. We can use a policeman," Jerry commanded as he tried to quiet his sisters and cousins, but we reminded him that his brother isn't a law enforcement officer -- yet.

Alex, 13, was at his friend's house, but it would have been helpful to have him mediate the squabbles about how to fold the flag.

After the boys figured it out and seven grandkids and a neighbor child covered their hearts and warbled "The Star-Spangled Banner," my own heart thumped with pride at their patriotic gestures.

Similar teary emotions overwhelmed me on June 24, at Alex's Camp Cadet graduation at Allegheny College. Sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Police, Camp Cadet is open to teens 13 to 15 in Troop E's region of Erie, Crawford, Warren and Venango counties. I've read about the camp, now in its 39th year, but didn't truly appreciate its influence until the graduation ceremony.

Keynote speaker Lt. Bradley Allen says parents are always amazed by their children's transformation during the weeklong camp, where the kids are roused at 5:30 a.m. to start a rigorous schedule of physical conditioning, precision drill instruction and classes on police work, such as forensics, drug interdictions and crash investigations.

When the demands get tough, medics from EmergyCare, a major sponsor, tell the campers, "You can do it," Alex says.

"We're in awe by the way they change," says Trooper Robert K. Brown, camp director. "I tell the parents when they drop off the kids on Sunday, 'Bring a video camera. You're dropping boys and girls off, we're giving you back young men and women.'"

The camp's purpose is to foster "a connection with kids from the community and police officers, and to teach a little bit about leadership and character," Brown says. Each camper also leaves with a blue baseball cap to honor an officer killed in the line of duty, Brown says.

Alex's favorite activity was the "house breach" exercise, where they wore "cool police uniforms -- the mask, the helmet, the chest plate and the leg guards," as they flushed out the bad guys.

What did he learn? "Obey the law! It changed the way I think, about things that I do and the way that I act," Alex says. "It makes school seem more important -- and listening to people.
