Big turnout for MAS adoption sale

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Metro Animal Services hosted a mass adoption sale Tuesday after a deadly disease outbreak at one of its shelters.  Time is so important to save those dogs -- it moved many families to act.

"It's just connecting with the right dog and hoping it works out," says Jocelyn Sutphin.  Many of the dogs at the MAS Manslick shelter needed a new home -- fast.

Three pups there contracted a deadly and contagious disease -- distemper -- after workers failed to properly vaccinate them.  The facility was thoroughly cleaned and no other cases have been discovered.

Yet about 80 other dogs need to be moved out by the end of the week or they may be put to sleep.  Susan Neumayer, the Interim Director of MAS, explains, "That's our attempt to do a real deep thorough cleaning of the kennel areas," adding, "These are the dogs we want to immediately move to good homes."

12-year-old Noah Taylor believes he has one of those good homes.  He picked Chase, a 2-year-old Jack Russell terrier who was abandoned by his owner.  Noah says, "I'm going to play with him, because my dog ran away and I want a new dog."

Kids proved to be the real motivators in this movement, with many of them pleading for particular dogs to take home.

The MAS call for help brought on the masses, but people are learning that the dog they bring home could have the same deadly disease that killed three others.  "I think it's a risk," says Kevin Etherton, who was looking for a dog, "but the dog's future without adoption -- this is a much better chance than the dog is going to get."

It is a bit more concerning for Noah's mom.  Noah told her, "I think they should all have another chance."  That young man now has a new best friend.

The pet sale goes on till 9 o'clock Tuesday night.  You can get a dog or a cat for just $9.

With the large turnout came incredibly long delays today.  It took one family more than two hours to leave with a dog.

MAS leaders say they were not expecting such a crowd.

They plan to do a sale again and expect to have a more organized process.
