Owens' family make up a tennis dynasty in Wiggins
WIGGINS, Miss. — Wynn Alexander built a tennis court in his backyard when his daughter, Laura, was in the fifth grade.
That court has turned into a court of champions.
Laura won a pair of state singles championships at Stone County High School in 1984 and 1985. And now her daughter, Christa Owen, is coming off her first state singles championship in Class 5A at Stone High School.
And Wynn Alexander has the satisfaction and enjoyment of knowing he coached both his daughter and granddaughter during their state title runs.
"I feel very blessed," said Wynn Alexander, who will turn 70 in August. "I learned the game with Laura Jean when she was coming along. She and I learned it together and then I was able to coach her in high school."
Christa, 16, will be a junior at Stone High School in the fall.
Her sister, Beth, 13, is coached by her mom. Beth will be in eighth grade in the fall. They both played for the Stone High team this past season, one in which Stone finished second team-wise to Oxford in Class 5A.
The 6-foot-1 Christa Owen likes to play serve-and-volley. She defeated Ann Marie Edlin of Oxford 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the State 5A individual singles finals.
Beth played No. 1 girls doubles with Tori Rose.
"It was a battle that first set," Christa said of her title match. "She stayed ahead of me in the first set. I was down 5-3 and had to come back and tie it at 6-all. The tiebreaker was epic. I think the heat got to both of us. She went off her game and I stayed on. That's how the second set went.
"I've been playing lot of USTA matches this summer. I just got back from Rome, Ga., where I played in the 16 Closed for Southerns. I won a couple of rounds but those Georgia girls are tough.
"I have a lot of room to improve. I have two more years of high school and you can only go up."
Christa and Beth will be playing in the Mississippi Junior Championships at the Bayou Bluff Tennis Club this weekend.
Laura, 44, said that her daughters play the game a little differently than she did.
"Dad's doing a great job, they love him and it is good grampa time," Laura said. "Christa's style is totally different (from mine). I was steady, ran good, hit it back, always kept it in play. I had a big forehand.
"Christa is totally different. She has a big serve, she likes to come to the net. I never liked that. (Beth) plays a little more like me but they both want to hit a drop shot and do things I never liked to do.
