Summer - News - Roots & Shoots
Yes—the school year has ended and you are on vacation! But Roots & Shoots projects can be done any time of the year. Summer is especially great for doing projects outdoors because nature loves warm weather. Explore nature in your backyard or a state park with your Roots & Shoots group or your family.
In fact, you can bring animals to you by creating cool habitats for them like a birdhouse or birdfeeder! Help a bird species in your area by creating a birdfeeder just for them. The Save the World Roots & Shoots group in Maryland chose to build birdhouses for bluebirds in their community. Observe birds that come to your feeder throughout the summer, and share your observations with others by recording them in the Project Database.
There are a number of summer camps that specialize in service, conservation, or the environment. See what summer camps are available in your area. Record your time at camp in a journal so you can look back at what you have learned. If you can’t find a camp in your area, don’t worry; just create a “camp” of your own. Gather a group of your friends and plan your own project that helps the people, animals and environment in your community.
Here are more ideas for potential projects:
Plant a Summer Garden to eat yummy fresh (and healthy!) fruits and vegetables. Find out how to keep up your garden during each month of the summer. The Austin Academy Roots and Shoots Environmental Club in San Antonio, Texas learned about healthy eating while planting an organic vegetable garden to provide food for their families and a local food bank. Participate in the On the Edge: Hope for Animals and Their World youth campaign by creating a PSA or presentation about endangered species in your area and give a presentation in your community. Have an ‘awareness parade’ with friends. Decorate bicycles to show your support of the environment or world peace and ride them around your neighborhood. Hold a yard sale to clean out the clutter and then give the funds to a good cause! Volunteer! Animal shelters, hospitals, and food banks always need your help, no matter the time of year. The Resources for Health Roots & Shoots group helped to pack meals at the Oregon Food Bank. And finally, visit the Event Calendar to get more project ideas.Have fun with your summer Roots & Shoots project! Don’t forget your sunscreen and remember to stay safe and hydrated this summer, and always ask a parent or adult before starting any project. We look forward to hearing what you come up with! Don’t forget to submit your summer project online and to send us awesome pictures!
