Eagle Scout ranks add David Kaplan, Troop 806
David Kaplan, son of Joe and Joy Kaplan, became an Eagle Scout of Boy Scout Troop 806, which is sponsored by the Brotherhood of Congregation Beth Israel.
The Eagle is the highest rank awarded to a Boy Scout.
For his Eagle Project, Kaplan organized and built a butterfly garden at Goldberg B’nai B’rithTowers. Goldberg Towers is a H.U.D. subsidized apartment project for the elderly and disabled. Kaplan spent months of research on everything from the migration habits of butterflies in the Houston area to the proper material to use in building a raised bed. On the day of installation and before the last plant was even in the ground the residents were drawn to the garden and began watering, connecting and enjoying.
Kaplan joined Cub Scout Pack 806 in 2003 and in 2005 became an active member of Troop 806. He served in various leadership positions including Quartermaster and Assistant Quartermaster (four times). He has been recognized for top sales in the troop fundraiser (BBQ chicken) three times. In addition to attending the monthly scout camp-outs, he has attended summer camp at Camp Meriwether, Camp Many Point, Camp Whitsett and Camp Cherry Valley for four great summer experiences.
A rising senior Emery High School, Kaplan has been a member of the football, basketball and track teams since freshman year. He is a member of National Honor Society. As an active BBYO member and officer of Cyrus Adler #434, Kaplan oversaw and implemented their record breaking fundraiser which raised more than $12,000.

I had not been camping since I was a young boy. I’d forgotten all the skills involved, all those little cable ties and knots and ways to make fires – all forgotten. When my son joined the cub scouts, there were a couple of camping trips that we were invited to go on with the other cub scouts. It sounded like a lot of fun for my some and me so we decided to go. I got what I thought was needed for a two day camping trip. We had a small tent, some sleeping bags and an ice chest full of food that would not be difficult to prepare. I thought that was doing it the right way. When we arrived at the campsite I was shocked by what I saw that the other families had. Their tents were more like mansions. Some of the people had portable kitchens set up so they could prepare restaurant style meals. One person even had a portable shower. My son and I still had a great time that weekend, but by the next camping trip we had managed to acquire the things that I found out were really essential to camping.
