Shuttle would inhibit return of beach parking

I grew up on Chincoteague Island. I graduated from Chincoteague High School in 1992. I attended college at Salisbury University, and then graduate school at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. After college, I began work at NASA Wallops Flight Facility.

I probably could have moved away and found a job in a city somewhere. However, I chose to live and work here because I love Chincoteague Island and its unique way of life.

I'm convinced that the single greatest threat to Chincoteague's unique way of life is Refuge Manager Lou Hinds' plan to eliminate beach parking on Assateague and institute a beach shuttle.

Over the years Chincoteague's leaders and business people have been very successful in turning Chincoteague Island into a world-class tourist destination, while at the same time being able to retain Chincoteague's quaint small-town atmosphere.

This is what makes Chincoteague so unique. Chincoteague's forefathers built the town's tourism industry by relentlessly promoting the town's two greatest assets: a pristine beach accessible by private vehicle and the wild ponies.

Like it or not, Chincoteague's economy is directly tied to the beach parking on Assateague. So goes the beach parking, so goes our local economy and prosperity, so goes the unique way of life that I, and so many of you, love dearly.

The problem is that the fate of the government officials managing Assateague is not in any way tied to the success of our local economy. They have no real "skin in the game" so to speak.

If the beach shuttle turns out to be a colossal failure, they're government salary doesn't stop. Eliminating beach parking would probably be viewed as a feather in Hinds' cap within the National Fish & Wildlife Service. It would leave behind a devastated local economy.

Sure the current location of the beach parking is not ideal due to overwash from storms. Look at a map of how Assateague Island's shoreline has changed over the past 150 years. You will see that portion of beach where the current parking is located did not even exist in 1850.

Barrier Islands move and their shorelines change. However, the beach parking could be moved to a much more stable area to the north. Refuge managers have conceded that this is a viable option.

So why are they so bent on purchasing a campground on Chincoteague to set up remote beach parking? Hinds says that it is to temporarily bus people to the beach while parking lots are being rebuilt after a storm. But we all know, once they have a beach shuttle in place, they simply won't rebuild the beach parking lots.

To those members who say that "life isn't fair so get over it": We are here at IV not to get used to unfairness, but to do something about it. I was stuck at BEC for many years. It is the most unpredictable of all GC stages; and those who didn't have to go through the BEC mess should consider themselves lucky. Cases can drag on for years; cases get closed arbitrarily; and there is hardly any way to communicate with the BECs. Try to understand the difficulties of those stuck at BECs instead of trying to make fun of them. to put numbers to your guess, I am guessing roughly even at an optimistic approach, 1000 applications from EB3-I from 2002 may have ported to eb2 or left the country and nothing more than. Why not we do these guys. just a IV sampling poll. Lets create a poll for IV members alone, for eb3-I alone. Lets give all the 12 months as option, and people can update. We can atleast know how many cases are waiting in eb3-I from IV alone for the year 2002. What say you guys? any one wants to take up the initiative? We can also Add an option additionally for 2003 cases and so forth as one option. Our goal is to find how many of us here in IV are waiting with 2002 PD for eb3-I. 1) USCIS never looked at those cases which got ported out. So if they try to process cases in 2002 they might end up finding lesser cases needing approval than they actually counted, could be bcoz of porting or people who gave up and left the country. USCIS is auto porting the date if you have old labor and i140, I know few friends who got GC like that. How can we confirm the spillover interpretation. I am not familiar with the spillover rules but my understanding was that only if there in an excess in EB2 then the spillover gets down to EB3. Am I wrong or as per rules should spillover be distribued equally? If it has to be distributed equally then we need to do a mass mail or something and ask USCIS to explain. Even if 50 of us send letters to USCIS ther mihgt be some action. tri state: this is the most dedicated bunch there is...singhsa3, chanduv23, tnight, siravi, mpadapa, mbartosik, poonam and many others worked tirelessly against serious odds to cover the region with fliers and motivate rally goers and contributors. i'm sure i'm forgetting someone...very sorry...tell me and i'll edit :-) tikka whose commitment to iv is always without question made it to the rally despite serious work constraints and always set an example for others to follow.
