Portsmouth bats come alive in 9-10 victory

PORTSMOUTH — After suffering a 15-0 defeat at the hands of defending District II champion Rye on Saturday, Portsmouth coach Jose Roy urged his kids to put that game behind them as round-robin play of the 9- and 10-year old Little League All-Star district tournament continued on Tuesday against Somersworth.

Portsmouth reversed its fortunes in style with an 18-8 victory at Plains Field. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Anthony Gagliano led Portsmouth's 10-hit attack with three hits and three RBIs. Portsmouth (2-1) took advantage of six Somersworth errors and put the game away with four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth.

"After the last game, it was nice to see the bats come alive," Roy said. "We just let them know it was just one game and our goal is still in front of us; we want to be one of the four teams left standing. This game was the only game that mattered and I think they bought into it."

Cam Duncan pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief for Portsmouth to pick up the win. He gave up one run (unearned) on three hits, with three strikeouts and one walk.

"It was the survival of the bigger bats," Somersworth coach Matt Hamilton said. "We pitched alright; it was just defense. It is what it is. It's just Little League baseball."

Somersworth (1-3) took a 7-6 lead on Colby Grant's two-run single in the top of the third and chased Portsmouth starter Clay Hundermark out of the game in the process. Hundermark gave up seven runs (four earned) on five hits, with three strikeouts and three walks.

Portsmouth scored three runs off Grant in the bottom of the inning on Gagliano's RBI single. Gagliano and C.J. Baroni scored on an error to give Portsmouth a 9-7 lead.

Somersworth committed three errors and relief pitcher Nick Dalesio walked two in the fourth, leading to four Portsmouth runs. Duncan, Gagliano, Baroni and Timm Kutzer scored the runs to give Portsmouth a 13-8 advantage.

The only run Duncan gave up came in the fourth, when Edwin Estevez singled and scored on an error. Roy was pleased with the way Duncan settled the game down.

"Cam is one of this kids that played in the Majors this year, and some of the younger kids haven't faced this type of competition, and Cam has faced bigger competition," Roy said. "All we wanted him to do was throw strikes. (Hundermark) threw well but had trouble getting it in the strike zone. Cam did a fantastic job of pounding the strike zone.
