Province funding new cancer drug
The provincial government’s decision last week to fund the second-line treatment drug Afinitor for kidney cancer comes as a huge relief to Hettie Van Veld.
The 53-year-old grandmother was diagnosed with kidney cancer in July 2008 and frequently travels back and forth between her home in Pictou County and specialists in Halifax.
“Extreme fatigue is what I experienced. Nothing else. I thought, ‘Okay, I’m 50. If this is menopause, I don’t like it but it will pass,” she recalled. “When I saw my family doctor I was sent on a raft of tests, and a CT scan showed it was there on my left kidney and right adrenal gland.”
After seven excruciating weeks, she had surgery and everything went very well. During a follow-up CT scan in 2009 however, the cancer was shown to have spread to her lungs.
“Then they said we have treatment but no cure. It was devastating,” she recalled.
Her oncologist Lori Wood put her on a drug called Sutent. That drug kept her going for two years, but is no longer working to keep the cancer at bay. Her next and only course of action is Afinitor, which until last week wasn’t covered by MSI.
“I’m the first person to be on it (covered in Nova Scotia) and am starting it on Monday,” she said last week. “I don’t even know how to put into words what this means to me and my family. I am walking on air.”
Van Neld’s zest for life is infectious. She enthusiastically chats about her passion for family, friends, photography, reading, road trips with her husband, and quilting. She’s in the process of making quilts for each of her four grandchildren and considers herself extremely fortunate.
Her hope is that Afinitor will do for her what Sutent did — shrink some of the cancer and keep it at bay for a few years to buy her more time.
“My youngest grandchild is two months old. I like the simple things, like holding a new baby and quiet times with my family and my husband,” she said. “I try not to look too far into the future because you miss the beauty of each day.”
Lori Wood is a medical oncologist and associate professor in the Department of Medicine and Urology at Dalhousie University. She said kidney cancer differs from other cancers in that there isn’t any known treatment like chemotherapy or radiation that can be used to decrease the chances of reoccurrence after surgery.
“Since 2005, there has been an explosion of treatment options called targeted therapies,” she explained. “This has made major advances in many cancers, but markedly in kidney cancer..Targeted therapies block the pathway and disease growth.
