Great Basin wants to lease school | Pahrump Valley Times
By Selwyn Harris
It appears Mt. Charleston Elementary School’s legacy of education will continue despite its closing.
A discussion at the board of trustees meeting last Tuesday focused on leasing the campus to Great Basin College.
The campus is in “mothball” status after closing its doors to local students for the final time last month.
Dr. Michael McFarlane, vice president of academic affairs at Great Basin College, told board members the campus would be an ideal location for the college.
“We would be interested in potentially leasing that facility from you for at least a couple of years, and I think there would be some benefits to both of us. You would receive some income from us and in just being there I think that would be a better alternative than having it empty and subject to vandalism,” he said.
McFarlane also assured board members that the college will be a fixture in the community for many years to come.
“Great Basin College, I just want to make it clear, we are here to stay. Sometimes we hear rumors we’re going to be gone or we’re going to be doing this, but put those aside. We are here to stay and we want to grow in Pahrump,” he said.
The college is in talks with the Bureau of Land Management to acquire more than 200 acres of land to build a new campus near Carpenter Canyon.
McFarlane said he’s not exactly sure when the BLM deal will be completed.
Great Basin College essentially shares its campus with Pahrump Valley High School now, making it tough for those who commute to the campus to find parking.
McFarlane told board members it’s important that the college have a separate identity from the high school.
“It doesn’t mean we don’t want to cooperate with the high school. We really are interested in continuing to pursue dual credit opportunities. There’s a lot of things that we have the opportunity to do. We’re just a little confined and restricted on the space there,” he said.
Board members expressed their support on McFarlane’s proposal.
Trustee Tracie Ward motioned to have Superintendent Dr. Rob Roberts enter into a lease agreement with Great Basin College.
The motion passed unanimously.
Board President Harold Tokerud suggested the move would be a win-win situation for all parties involved.
“We would like to see the land used, the buildings used and it’s to everybody’s benefit here,” he said.
