What I'm Into: Keaton Rogers, 25

Why you should know him: Rogers is a carpenter and "artist of many media" who works at West End Architectural Salvage. He also creates wood ear gauges and plugs for his side business, Invasion Organics. (Find the business on Facebook.)

How Invasion Organics started: I started watching videos on YouTube of guys making bracelets and pens with various exotic woods on a wood lathe. I also had a lot of friends with their ears gauged, so I started to brainstorm and then bought my own lathe. Then I just started to make my own gauges and all of my friends' gauges as well.

Why woodworking: I love to work with my hands, and I have grown up through the years around craftsmen of many trades. I also feel wood is a classier look than some gaudy metal gauge.

When I'm not working, you'll find me: Either riding my xtracycle around town, hanging with my greater Swiss mountain dog, Kekoa, or just hanging with friends and having a good time being myself.

The first website I visit each morning: That would be Facebook and my gmail.

Something about me that may surprise people: I'm blind in my right eye, and I have a tattoo of a UFO picking up cows out of a cornfield.

First time I knew I was good at 'making stuff': When I was growing up, everyone would ask me for advice or help on art projects. Or when my friends and family called me about something they want me to design, make or draw for them.

Best advice I've ever received: Follow your heart, and do what makes you smile at the end of the day.

The demise of the weekend tinkerer

I was always drawn to the turning lathe, in which blocks of pine were transformed into beautiful balusters and other minor pieces of art. On the worktable was always the latest tinkering project, a radio or TV or lamp. Need to build a doghouse?

There are few books on this subject that present the material so clearly. The author uses very sharp, color pictures to illustrate what should be done, every step of the way. He purposely dose not employ sophisticated, high end equipment to produce the projects, but assumes that the beginner has not acquired them yet. By so doing, he encourages the beginner to not wait until that day when he has all that expensive stuff, to produce beautiful work. The book does not spend time instructing in sharpening tools, but concentrates on projects the kits for which, are available in most every woodworking store.

One criticism that I have is, that he only presents four or five projects to be made, so you can be done with this book in a hurry. It probably is not a book for the turner who’s been turning for a year or more.
