Andrean's Ryan named Mental Attitude Award winner
INDIANAPOLIS | Moments after her high school career came to an end, Andrean senior Kelly Ryan received the highest honor an Indiana athlete can achieve.
Ryan was named the Class 3A Mental Attitude Award winner at the conclusion of Roncalli's 8-0 state championship win over the 59ers.
The senior catcher has been a four-year starter for the 59ers and was named to the All-Northwest Crossroads Conference team in each of her four years. Ryan was named First Team All-State this season after leading Andrean with a .412 batting average.
"This means a lot and I didn't expect it," Ryan said. "It's nice to be recognized and it's just very humbling."
Ryan graduate from Andrean with a 4.4 grade point average and finished sixth in her class. The senior has received an academic scholarship to the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. Andrean received a $1,000 scholarship in her name from Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance.
"It was a touching thing as a father when she was named as the Mental Attitude Award winner," Andrean coach Henry Ryan said. "That was something that I didn't know anything about."
Going out together: After playing well over 100 games together, Andrean seniors Meghan Bridgeman and Ryan took the field for the final time together on Saturday afternoon.
Ryan started every game of her high school career dating back to her freshman season and Bridgeman been there for every one of those games since getting called up from junior varsity midway through her freshman season in 2008.
"We've been together for a long time and we just tried to keep the team up today," Bridgeman said. "We have to look at it like we got to the finals, we made it to the last game and we played our hearts out."
Bridgeman plans to attend Purdue Calumet with the possibility of transferring to UIC in the future and still hasn't ruled out playing collegiate softball. Ryan will be attending IU and is also considering softball in college.
The fact that the senior class at Andrean has already gone through graduation brought a little bit more closure to Ryan and the rest of her senior teammates on Saturday.
"It's really hard because this is really our final thing together," Ryan said. "Bridge and I have been together for so long. It will be different not playing with these girls anymore."
The 59ers also said goodbye to seniors Alexandrea Haugh, Natasha Zurek and Lauren Coppinger on Saturday.
