Boy pleads guilty in school stabbing

A 17-year-old boy pleaded guilty Thursday to aggravated assault in the April 18 stabbing of a student at Halifax West High School with a pair of scissors.

Judge Jamie Campbell ordered the teenager to return to Halifax youth court July 12, when the facts of the offence will be read into the record.

Defence lawyer Megan Longley of Nova Scotia Legal Aid gave notice that she will be seeking to have the young man referred to the restorative justice program.

If he meets the requirements of his restorative justice agreement, the boy could receive a discharge at sentencing.

He was arrested April 18 after a 17-year-old boy was stabbed in a classroom at about 10:15 a.m., between classes.

The victim was taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The accused was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He’s been free on bail since April 27, living on house arrest at his sister’s residence in Bedford.

Both boys were Grade 12 students at Halifax West. Their identities are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

BEN'S PRISON BLOG: Scales of Justice

The first blog by a serving British prisoner, looking stupidity and ignorance in the eye whilst attempting to inject some neurons into the criminological debate. Variously described as being "obviously extremely intelligent" (Michael Gove MP), "full of shit" (Mark Leach) and a "fully paid up member of the awkward squad" (Parole Board). Ben strives to generate debate around the moral and political nexus that is imprisonment.

The press seem determined to paint the courts in a negative light at the moment, no matter what the courts decide. In this case, a High Court Judge (which means one of the most senior 150 judges in England and Wales) and a QC prosecutor did not object to the line of questioning. That suggests that the questions were valid and related to the defense. Ben Gunn is "one of Britain's best known prisoners...he constantly questions authority and exposes the futility of the system" The Times. Pleading guilty to the murder of a friend when he was 14 years old, Ben has since renounced violence and consistently fought for the recognition of the inherent dignity of all human beings. As a result of speaking truth to power, Ben has served far longer than the recommended 10 years, leading Education Secretary Michael Gove to argue that Ben "has been punished excessively for a crime committed as a child", and Lord Ramsbotham to state that "It is expensive and unnecessary to keep Ben Gunn in prison". One of the more intellectual of prisoner-campaigners, Ben chose to educate himself from a schoolboy level to having both undergraduate and post graduate degrees. He is currently one of very few prisoners in Britain ever to attempt a Doctorate. Ben's speciality is non-violent action and the Human Needs Theory. Despite all provocations and the difficulties of existence in prison, Ben has never committed an act of violence since the age of 14.
