The Torch Stops Here

The Torch Stops Here

A piece of unique Olympic memorabilia will now be on display for all to see in South Charleston.

Bob Anderson, head of the South Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau, has donated an authentic Olympic torch from the 2001 games to the city to serve as an inspiration to all young athletes in South Charleston.

"It's very unique,"  said Anderson. "Only a runner in the Olympics would be able to acquire one.  The only reason I was able to buy one was they had a couple left over and I was the first one to ask.  We're really thrilled."

Anderson wasn't a runner, but he did sponsor the torch stop in South Charleston in 2001 as the flame made its way across the nation to the games in Utah.  Anderson personally paid for the torch and is donating it to the city.

"It's really a masterpiece in a beautiful box," said Anderson. "We've had one Olympian from South Charleston in baseball (Jeremy Cummings) and of course there's Mary Lou Retton.  We want to encourage others to go onto the Olympics."

The torch will occupy a prominent spot in the lobby of the South Charleston Community Center.   There is will serve in an area of high exposure to the young athletes of South Charleston who pass through the doors routinely to participate in sporting activities.

"We encourage people to go in and see it and have their picture taken with it,"  said Anderson.

Small Business Lunch at Halls Presents Helen Hill July 7th | Miss A™

Emily Meier is a recent transplant to Charleston. It became clear to her a few years ago that Charleston, with it’s amazing people, culture, and proximity to the water, had her by the heart. She realized this on the way back to Michigan after a visit with friends and she started to cry. She just didn’t want to leave Charleston. The lady at the airport gift shop thought she was crying about leaving a guy. When Emily realized she was crying about leaving a place, she knew she’d be back. A graduate of Denison University she also holds an MFA from Bennington. Currently, she teaches college English (writing and literature) and works as a freelance editor helping potential MBA and law school candidates prepare their essays. With friends and family all over the states, Emily enjoys traveling and is always up for a trip in support of a cause. If you have a charity or cultural event, restaurant, boutique, spa, or salon you would like covered, or a book or movie reviewed on Miss A, please contact Emily at emilymeier@aol.com .
