The Saints, though, may have felt like they played twice.
Spa Catholic erased a 10-3 deficit Saturday with a nine-run fifth inning, only to surrender eight in the bottom of the sixth. The end result was an 18-14 loss to Chenango Valley of Section IV (Binghamton area) in the Class B semifinals at Binghamton University .
"We have seven seniors, and these guys have gone to the states in back-to-back years," Saints coach Phonsey Lambert said. "They just weren't going to quit. There was never any doubt in this dugout that these kids were going to come back, but we just couldn't finish it."
Spa Catholic (21-3), which won the Section II title for the fourth time in five years, pretty much was written off through four innings. Chenango Valley (19-2) posted a pair of five-run innings, capitalizing on four errors in the fourth, for a 10-3 lead.
