Centre Turnpike enables another avenue of travel
Before the railway there was the canal.
Before the canal, there was the road turnpike.
In 1811, people were talking about canals. Although some work had been started, there was much skepticism about any of the projects seeing completion, let alone being of much use.
A railroad at that time - called a tram - was merely a set of wooden rails on which a heavy horse-drawn wagon could be pulled from rough terrain to a water port. The suggestion of running steel tramways across the countryside upon which giant steam-powered tractors could draw long convoys of coupled wagons and coaches would likely have been met with howls of laughter in a tavern of newly born Schuylkill County.
An improved road, not pipe dreams is what they needed, and they got it.
The earliest highways in the county were not built primarily so people could get here. They were constructed so travelers could get past here to someplace even more remote.
When Schuylkill County was founded, it took a lot of time to get from one place to another on the network of narrow dirt roads, bridle paths and old Indian trails that connected the villages, farmsteads and sawmills.
Even with the new county government soon to be set up with a courthouse, jail and other public buildings, for most of the first Schuylkill Countians, it was going to eat up the whole day to go to the county seat and conduct bus-iness. At least it would be nearer than Reading, however.
There was one good road in the county, but it was only a little bit good. The Centre Turnpike had just opened in 1808 and was still under construction, yet it was the only sure thing the new county had in the way of improvements to its infrastructure.
A week to the day before the General Assembly created Schuylkill County, it had voted to incorporate the Union Canal Co., which would take on several scattered, ill-conceived attempts to build a complete system of navigation connecting the Susquehanna and Schuylkill river valleys.
Yet how exactly that would affect the new county and when any work might begin was still unknown in 1811. In fact, it would take the creation of a second company, the Schuylkill Navigation, chartered in 1815, to bring reliable water travel to the county. So the Centre Turnpike represented the future in transportation.
New nation demands internal improvementsLike the canal that would come later as Pennsylvania's answer to New York's Erie Canal, the Centre Turnpike was also part of a national trend.
