'The Glee Project,' Series Premiere: TV Recap

You have a four-foot-nine dude with the abs of gold. A sassy Latina who takes flirting way too far. A hipster-nerdy heart breaker with songwriting skills. A classically-trained soprano with femme fatale looks and bright eyes. And a Northern Irish teenager with a penchant for American standards, but doesn’t know the words to “Jesse’s Girl.” All waiting to hear those words: “You have won the Glee Project.”

Consider it another singing competition that’s as formulaic as “The Voice,” “American Idol” and the forthcoming “X-Factor.” Awkward auditions, unpolished raw talent, and a winner chosen not by true singing ability alone, but a smattering of subjective factors: acting, dancing, lip-synching. It’s an infomercial masked as a 10-episode pseudo documentary/reality show to whet our appetites for the third season of “Glee,” the phenom of a TV show.

This one, though, had one final hook: make the writers of “Glee” write for you. (They say you actually win a guest-starring role for seven episodes, but really the writers and producers need new blood.  The original cast needs to graduate high school, and as much as we love Lea Michele and her backup singers, they can only play young for so long.)

The premiere episode delivers us 12 fresh faces, cut down from 40,000 applicants. One piece of advice audition-goers: please don’t do Britney Spear’s “Hit Me Baby One More Time.”

They appear through a boot camp of sorts: learning to dance, creating characters they’d like to be on the show, recording into the studio, and “acting” in a music video. The three worst performers get to do one final hurrah in front of Ryan Murphy, creator and director. Some of the characters immediately shone for their uniqueness and ability to be glib on camera.

Damian works the Irish accent and those eyebrows. Cameron plays up his nerdy side, while playing down his rock-star potential. McKynleigh shows her country-bumpkin’ sweetness, but boy, she rocks the lip-synching. And Matheus, the short guy that reminds you both of Artie and David Archuleta, surprises everyone by winning their first “homework,” in which they had to perform Stevie Wonders’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours.” He gets some tips from Darren Criss, who plays Blaine on the show, telling him to stay grounded.

2. Redi-Set-Go Express. I love watching anything Cathy Mitchell is in. She comes across as your mom or grandmother, calmly showing you new, quick ways to cook your favorite foods. At the same time, she looks like she'd really make you cry if you dared to suggest she cook the food any other way (for example, telling her that when you make a pizza the pepperoni goes on top of the cheese not the sauce). I like the one with the insizer, the fancy curling iron that makes the most unruly and frizzy hair silky smooth. They sould have Adam Sandler in it . I always wanted one,but I just can't see paying a hundred dollars for it. I thought maybe after it went to Walmart or Walgreens, like most of the products do, the price would reduce, so far it has'nt and I.m still waiting.
