Recording over the duration of a weekend at ThinkT Studios, the band have honed in on a different set of emotions through their music; confusion, confidence, alienation – themes the group have found now they’ve come of age (re: growing pains). marks a general shift in sound for the band; lyrically the group who were viewed as being older than they actually were have charted a course on the trials of young adulthood. “Lol Wut” details the wrought problems of honesty in a relationship in the age of Web 2.0, while “Answer Machine” pulls in moments of New Wave alongside it’s forlorn moments of college rock.
“Batman Through A Telescope” charts the band’s experimentation with dynamics and a stripped back approach to the recording process – with the EP becoming grittier than their previous outing however retaining the sensitive empathy within vocalist Earl Ho’s range and lyricism. The clockwork like rhythm section that glued the band together on their previous release has gotten a great deal tighter, with Sam Cussen and Vince McMillan keeping the guitar work in check with their clockwork syncopation.
That’s not however to say the group have totally moved away from the sound that introduced them to popularity; “Cool Fool”, the group’s first single taken from the EP still retains that level of juvenile delinquency, twinning elements of grunge with their tried and tested moments of power pop.
With the addition of second guitarist Ben Tindall to the group, there is yet more experimentation on the cards – the inclusion of new instrumentation, a chance for Ho to wander even more into uncharted soundscapes and an added dynamic to further refine the bands sound.
